The network organizes an annual Innovative Learning Institute for Circumpolar Health (ILICH) for approximately two weeks every Summer. The Summer Institute sees 12-15 northern nursing students come together to meet and learn from their peers and jointly examine and compare nursing practices and needs around the Circumpolar North. Some network members may choose to provide credit for the course. There is no clinical component.
Funding is currently available for member institutions to nominate one upper-year student every Summer to participate. Individual members will determine their selection processes and accreditation mechanism.
The 2016 ILICH was held in Saskatchewan, with a week of seminars and lectures at the University of Saskatchewan, in Saskatoon; and a week visiting communities and hearing about health and wellness from a local perspective, in northern Saskatchewan. Students joined from Iceland (Akureyri), Greenland, Norway (Finnmark/Troms), Russia (Yakutsk), Finland (Lapland), and from northern Manitoba, British Columbia and Saskatchewan. Thanks to all of our wonderful hosts!
The 2017 ILICH will be hosted by UiT The Arctic University of Norway. The Institute will be based in Tromsø, Norway from the 3rd to the 17th of July. To learn more and apply, contact your member liaison.
